Linux work shop conducted by Marian MCA

As part of faculty development programme of Marian MCA, a two day work shop on RedHat Linux was conducted from 16th to 17th October 2009. There were 23 participants from our college and other colleges.
The programme started with a silent prayer at 10 am in the presence of Rev.Fr.Ruban J.Thannikkal [Manager, Marian college].Rev.Dr.A.J.George.Ambazhathikal [Principal, Marian college], Dr.Mendus Jacob [Director, MCA], all the faculties in MCA department together with the participants. Ms.Raji.R.Nair of MCA department anchored the function. Dr.Mendus Jacob welcomed all the dignitaries, Resource Person Mr. Amel Mathai, Technical Consultant from Redhat India PVT Ltd and all the Participants f. There was a message from Fr.Manager and Fr.Principal .They complemented MCA department for taking such an initiative.

Mr.Amel Mathai, a Red Hat Certified Engineer Technical consultant, gave audience a basic background as to what Linux is and why it is required. The interactive session was very informative as he spoke at length, on Open source Technology and demonstrated the Red Hat development model and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Overview.


In the afternoon session, there was a lab session to introduce the commands in Linux. The session over by 4.P.M.
The next day started with Linux file system and file operation permissions. After a high Lunch from Red Chillies, Kuttikkanam, there was a lab session to introduce the shell programming in Linux.


The certificate for the participants and the Memento for the resource person are handed over by Mr. Santo Cherian, HOD, MCA department. The workshop ended with a word of thanks by Mr.Satheesh Kumar, Faculty of Marian MCA at 4.30 and all dispersed in an enriched manner.

Exam Time

Exam fever hits again. MCA semester exams are on its way. The 4th semester exams are expected by mid November and other year exams to soon follow. Model exams have already started.

Ice breaking

The MCA department of Marian College has welcomed yet another batch into the MCA family. Marking the end of tensions and ragging period, as it is called, the ice breaking session for the new batch was celebrated on the 14th of October 2009. Although i mentioned ragging earlier, the term doesn't exist, in the department, with the same meaning as in earlier days. Its just the wishing stuff and attitude show by seniors than anything serious, thanks to the efforts of hostel warden, Fr. James Kozhimala.

The function was organised by the 2nd yr MCA students and was named 'Merhba', meaning welcome in Maltese. Almost all the first years got an opportunity to come on stage during the 3 hour program. Manager Fr. Ruben J Thannickal spoke a few words in a between the program (but frankly i dont think anyone heard a word of it. No one was in a mood for that). The function ended with the usual exchange of lights (candles) between the super-seniors and juniors. But this time it was a little different. The seniors lit their candles from a becon that was earlier lit my a flame that flew half way accross the stage by itself. (In between there was tea and snacks, I shouldn't skip that. We are not allowed to have big parties like there was earlier.) Later in the hostel all the batches of MCA sat together to have dinner and had a nice time that night, chatting and playing.

Also we the Clarion Team take this opportunity to express our welcome to all the new members of Marian MCA and we express our regards to all the seniors who are not here now, but are still an essential part of Marian MCA family.

Sad news hits MBC fest

The tech fest, Samasya, held at MBC College of Engineering hit a stunner when one of the participants died on the spot in a motor accident. The exact details of the accidents are not known yet, but according to our students who where taking part in the fest, this is what happened.

As part of the fest, a bike stunt show was organized. While practicing for the show, the person who died, lost control of his bike. On doing a front wheeling, the bike toppled and the back of his head hit the ground. There was no other injuries, it was said, but he died within a short time after that. One of the reason for the accident was the heavy winds that were blowing the whole day. But others point out that the main problem was that he wasn't wearing a helmet. If he was wearing one, there wouldn't have been any problem. At this point we, the Clarion team, emphasis the importance of wearing a helmet while riding a bike and express our condolences.
